Job Search

Since we got to San Antonio, I have done my best to look for employment. The first interview I had was a marketing firm. I was a little suspicious, but I was asked to dress professionally and felt better. I had heard about some of these entry level marketing positions in other parts of the US. Well I went back for the second interview to "shadow" someone, and lo and behold, it was door to door sales. I was offered the position, but did not feel it would be a good fit. The next glimmer of light came from an Italian restaurant I knew well from my childhood years. I went there twice before I got hired. I worked one day there and did not feel like it was a good fit. My wife and I had thought serving tables would be the perfect job because I would be able to cut back on hours once school started, but it wasn't for me.

At this point, one starts to feel discouraged. I have a Bachelor's degree in Economics from a good university, but now I realize that doesn't qualify me for jobs I want, and I am over-qualified for the jobs I don't want.

Yesterday I was given another job offer in a call center, but it would be 40-50 hours a week, which I think, may cause my head to explode come grad school.

With little hope left I began calling hospital volunteer departments. I got in touch with a place known as HealthLink, owned by Baptist Health Systems. It is a physical therapy clinic and a fitness club all in one. I was able to go meet a few administrators and they were more than willing to help me get started on a few projects, mainly marketing. What a blessing...one drawback...volunteer.

So then I ask myself to what extent should I volunteer. Is my unpaid work experience going to get me a job that pays back the foregone money from taking a paid, non health care job? As of right now, I hope so!
