Every fall, Trinity hosts a special speaker for their Leaders in Health Care Symposium. Here are my personal thoughts from this year's speaker, Dr. Ron Anderson:
Dr. Ron Anderson from Parkland Health and Hospital System, inspired me to become an expert in this field, as well as strive to work together with other health care professionals, including competitors for the whole of the community.
First, Dr. Anderson was constantly mentioning experiences and examples he had learned from being involved with certain boards and organizations. His involvement in these organizations seemed to be motivated by his desires to learn what he needs to do to be better at his job while making a difference. Because of his knowledge and his degree of expertise, I feel he has a greater capacity to influence those he works with as well as key stakeholders in the local and national communities. Specifically, he mentioned multiple times the need to become “a student of unintended consequences.” This phrase really caught my attention and become more evident as he spoke of certain initiatives Parkland is pushing and involved in. He mentioned Parkland’s focus on surviving with minimal reimbursements. It seems that from his years of experience, he has now reached the point where he knows how specific policies will impact not only his hospital, but also the local community.
In addition to his desire and passion for learning, he exemplified his desire to improve the community. A specific example that he discussed is Parkland’s programs to care for patients in the Jail. He realized that a lot of these community members in jail had great need for mental health, but also could be treated in order to prevent higher costs for the hospital in the future. Not only was he helping his hospital for the future, but he was also helping his community in big ways.
