Nearly two weeks ago, we visited University Hospital here in San Antonio's medical center. It is a county funded hospital and serves a wider scope of patients than the other hospitals we have visited. I had a number of experiences that opened my eyes to what it is like.
First, while walking through the ICU, I noticed a patient sitting up in a chair asleep. She was on plenty of machines as would be typical in the ICU. Across from her, was who I assume to be her husband. He was sitting on a chair, elbows on his knees and his chin resting on his hands. The feeling of love pervaded that room. I could see his concern, his hope, and his love all in his eyes. As a future employee of a hospital, it is those people I want to help just as much as the patients. The family and friends of patients need care just as much as those on the beds. It may be a different kind of service, but they need attention and concern.
The second experience was very similar to the first. We walked into the NICU and observed tiny babies being taken care of by nurses and family members. My heart ached for these parents who were given an experience something few of them ever expected. As a father myself, I remember the doubts and insecurities before my first child was born. What would it be like? Would there be complications? Would she be healthy? Again, the importance of compassion and love stood out.
